HOTEL FILOXENIA

Reviving Zakynthos’ Architecture, Zakynthos
In the land of the Ionian Sea, where nature meets history and the tranquility of the landscape blends with a rich cultural heritage, a new hotel complex emerges, one that seeks to showcase the authenticity of Zakynthos through a contemporary architectural lens.

In the land of the Ionian Sea, where nature meets history and the tranquillity of the landscape blends with a rich cultural heritage, a new hotel complex emerges, one that seeks to showcase the authenticity of Zakynthos through a contemporary architectural lens.

The design draws inspiration from the island’s vernacular tradition: stone-built surfaces, arches and porticos, vaulted openings, tiled roofs, and symmetrical façades that echo the memory of Zakynthos’ noble mansions. The strong presence of natural stone, textured surfaces, colourful plaster finishes, and crafted wooden details brings forward the character of local architecture, reinterpreted through a clear, modern language.

The rooms are arranged linearly, each featuring private gardens and pools that offer exclusivity and a sense of personal retreat. At the heart of the complex lies a striking central water element—a reflective pool that acts as the social and experiential core of the hotel. Framed by lounges, relaxation areas, and a bar serving both the poolside and the interior, this central oasis transforms the “disadvantage” of distance from the sea into a strength, recreating a water experience within the property itself.

Nature plays a defining role in the design. Centuries-old olive trees, Mediterranean planting, and carefully curated low vegetation embrace the buildings and pathways, while pergolas and shaded areas create pockets of coolness and calm. In the dining area, arches reappear as a rhythmic motif, shaping a hospitality setting that seamlessly blends local tradition with Mediterranean vibrancy.

With respect for heritage and a focus on contemporary experience, this new hotel in Zakynthos establishes an environment where architecture becomes a bridge between the island’s past and the future of Ionian hospitality.
